The information that we offer is of general nature at best and as such this cannot replace the advice of your doctor.

In general, diabetes insipidus (DI) is caused by a problem with the gland pituitary or the kidneys. Treatment varies depending on the cause of the problem. Medications are often helpful.

Will be provided vasopressin or desmopressin acetate, modified forms of the antidiuretic hormone, with a vaporizer nose several times a day to maintain a normal urine output. However, administration of these drugs cause excessive fluid retention, swelling and other symptoms. In patients with diabetes insipidus which being subjected to a surgical procedure or who are unconscious, they are usually injected antidiuretic hormone. There is the possibility of providing desmopressin acetate in the form of tablets, which do not require refrigeration, allowing a better distribution throughout the day, and avoid disadvantages of the vaporizer.

The use of this hormone is totally contraindicated with intracranial overvoltage, which may be other effects accompanying damage to the pituitary hypothalamus or in the case of head injury or brain tumor. In these cases it is urgent to redress this situation before treating diabetes insipidus.

Sometimes , diabetes insipidus can be controlled with drugs that stimulate production of antidiuretic hormone, such as chlorpropamide, carbamazepine, and several clofibrato the diuretics (TIACA). These drugs are not adequate to completely relieve symptoms in patients with severe diabetes insipidus .
